A man shot a male nurse to death at a hospital in Wang Nam Yen district of Sa Kaeo province early Thursday morning before breaking into a karaoke bar neaby and opening fire, killing four more people and seriously wounding another.
Pol Sub-Lt Meksith Lekthum, a duty officer at Khao Chakan police station, said he was notified of a shooting at the Wang Nam Yen hospital at 1.25am.
According to accounts from eyewitnesses, the man, identified later as Veera Waochangreed, 26, took his girlfriend, Wassana Thepthian, who had been physically attacked, to the hospital for treatment.
At the hospital, the man had a heated quarrel with Niphon Montri, 22, the male nurse, over the way he questioned Ms Wassana about the attack and her past medical records. Out of anger, the man pulled out a 9mm pistol and shot Mr Niphon in the head, killing him instantl in an emergency care unit.
At about 2.30am, Pol Lt-Col Kasem Wongthong, chief investigator of Wang Nam Yen police station, was reported on another shooting at a karaoke bar near the hospital. Police rushed to the scene to investigate.
On arriving at the karaoke bar for investigation, police found the bodies of four women. They were an 18-year-old Lao girl who was the bar owner, and three waitresses Sunisa Upadee, 21, Nee (surname unknown), 20, and May (surname unknown), 20. They all were hit with shots from a 9mm pistol.
A man, identified as Dam Butprom, 36, an employee of the local electricity office, was also seriously wounded. He was admitted to Wang Nam Yen Hospital.
Saifon Thaithanee, 25, who worked as a cook, told police that while she was sleeping in her room she heard many gunshots. At the time the bar had been closed.
After the noises of the gun went silent, she came out of the room and found the bar owner and three waitresses had been shot to death.
She said the bar owner was her friend who took over the business from Ms Wassana, Mr Veera's girlfriend, in January.
Police believed that the killings at the bar were also the work of Mr Veera, who had escaped.
Police were hunting for the man and investigating the shootings for more details.
