For those concerned about Euro notes, its worth noting that each country prefixes its own notes with a letter.
When Greece defaults, I haven't a clue what happens to the Euro notes in circulation in Greece however the Greek government could easily set a new exchange rate thats much worse than the rate at which they joined the Euro.
If you have a bundle of Euro notes that are mainly Greek, would Germany accept them ? Personally I haven't a clue but potentially you could be left with a severely devalued bunch of Greek Euro notes. Of course, the same could happen to other countries in the Euro such as Spain or Italy if they exited the Eurozone.
Anyway, here's a list of Euro notes showing who issues what by the letter prefix prior to the serial number and I'd advise using/laundering potentially 'risky' ones and keeping the 'safer' ones.
France - U.
Spanish - V
German - X.
Greek - Y
Belgium's - Z
Irish - T
Italy - S
Holland - P
Austrian - N
Portugal - M
Finland - L
Slovenia - H
Slovakia - E
Cyprus's - G
Malta - F
Estonian - D:D

I forsee crafty Thais changing Y to an X or am I too sin e call?

In the early hours of Saturday shots were fired at a luxury SUV driven by a Norwegian resident of Pattaya.

Police made their way to the Sukhumvit Road in South Pattaya close to Big C and met Mr. Morten Karres aged 40.

Five bullet holes were found along the passenger side of his White Toyota Fortuna and the passenger, Mr. Karres’s girlfriend, Khun Kanitar aged 33 sustained a gun shot wound to her left arm.

The couple explained they were on their way home after spending the night at a restaurant located at the Northern end of Pattaya Third Road.

A Black Toyota Vigo came up beside them and someone inside the vehicle shot in the direction of Mr. Karres’s vehicle and then drove off in the direction of East Pattaya.

The pair work in the Real Estate industry and reside in the Bang Sarae area, just outside of Pattaya.

A Court case is currently ongoing with another Real Estate company and Police suspect the shooting relates to that dispute although they cannot be sure for now.

The investigation continues.

Italian lighthouses auctioned off to tackle public debt pile
They stand on imposing headlands with spectacular views of isolated bays and white sandy beaches, some of the most picturesque in the Mediterranean.
A lighthouse is pictured in Palau, Sardinia. The lighthouses are being put up for lease by Sardinia's autonomous government, which says it can no longer afford the cost of maintaining the historic structures, let alone restoring them. Photo: Alamy

But now, as Italy tries to chip away at its mountainous public debt and assuage the concerns of international markets, more than a dozen lighthouses around the coast of Sardinia are to be leased out as boutique hotels, quirky bed and breakfasts, galleries and museums.

The plan comes as the six-month-old technocrat government of Mario Monti, the prime minister, forges ahead with an unpopular programme of tax hikes, labour and pension reforms and other much-needed measures to tackle the country's €1.9 trillion (£1.5 trillion) public debt, the highest in Europe.

The lighthouses are being put up for lease by Sardinia's autonomous government, which says it can no longer afford the cost of maintaining the historic structures, let alone restoring them. The cost of leasing them is not yet known – the Sardinian authorities say they will be auctioned off at "market rates" in the coming weeks.

The collection of 15 lighthouses and semaphore stations overlook secluded coves in some of Sardinia's most popular tourist spots, including the famed Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, and the Maddalena archipelago of islands in the north-east, which boast turquoise waters and white sand beaches reminiscent of the South Pacific.

One of the lighthouses, on the island of Razzoli, was built in 1845 but has been inactive since 1965 – made redundant, like all the rest, by modern replacements and ships' greater reliance on satellite navigation.

The 40ft-tall structure, which includes a stone keeper's house, can only be reached by boat.

The lighthouse on the nearby island of Santa Maria was built in 1913 and has a colourful history – its lantern used to be kept alight by Benedictine monks from a nearby monastery, which is now in ruins. It too is accessible only by boat.

"Some are in good condition and need just a little investment, while others are in a really bad state and would need a couple of million euros of refurbishment," said Alessio Satta, the executive director of Sardinia's Agency for Coastal Conservation, which is in charge of the scheme.

"They have been inaccessible to the public for ages because they were owned and run by the coast guard or the navy."

Inspiration for the project comes from a lighthouse in southern Sardinia which has been converted into a five-star luxury retreat. It is so far Italy's only lighthouse hotel.

The Capo Spartivento lighthouse, 30 miles from the regional capital of Cagliari, sits on an isolated promontory and is accessible only by a private dirt road.

Built in 1856 by the Italian navy, it is now one of the country's most exclusive resorts, with a suite during the summer season costing €1,000 a night.

It took businessman Alessio Raggio, 42, seven years to negotiate the lease, restore the building and convert it into a hotel.

The conversion of the historic building cost €3m. Mr Raggio has a 38-year lease on the property and pays rent of €3,000 a month to the regional government.

"Rebuilding a light house is not easy – especially one like this. It's on top of a 300ft cliff so it gets hit by a lot of wind, especially in the winter.

"Fortunately it was strongly built, with stones from the local area, and the main building was in good condition. You have to be a little bit crazy to take on a job like this, but it was worth it – we are fully booked this summer," he said.

Many of the lighthouses on the for-lease list offer a similarly challenging prospect for developers.

The lighthouse at Capo d'Orso (Bear Cape), near the town of Palau, is a typical case. Located on the very tip of the cape, it is accessible only by boat, or via a tough scramble up steep slopes overgrown with coastal scrub.

On the west coast of Sardinia, a lighthouse at Capo Mannu overlooks a good surfing beach, but the tower is in poor condition and will need a lot of structural work.

Private developers would be granted leases of at least 30 years in return for restoring the buildings.

While Capo Spartivento's high prices mean it is strictly for the well-heeled, the Sardinian authorities are envisaging the lighthouses under lease being converted into more modestly priced bed and breakfasts and boutique accommodation.

"We want to create places that can be visited by everybody. You'd pay between €100 and €150 a night," said Mr Satta of the coastal conservation agency. "We don't want to create fortresses for the rich."

The interest rate demanded by markets from the Spanish government to lend it money for 10 years has risen well above 6% - not far short of the 7%-8% level that prompted Greece, the Irish Republic and Portugal to go cap in hand to Brussels for a bailout.
In comparison, the German government only has to pay an interest rate of 1.42% - which, by the way, is the cheapest cost of borrowing that Berlin has ever faced.
I was under the impression that a union meant that you pooled resources and formed a erm... union. Seems Germany wants to have its sauerkraut and eat it. You've made a shedload out of this Krankl - start giving some of it back. At least share the load for the lending.
A combined force of 750 police and corrections officials raided Bang Kwang Central Prison in Nonthaburi on Wednesday and seized 28 mobile phones in an anti-drug operation at the prison.

Drug suspect ‘Boss’ held DeputyPMChalerm Yubamrung points at suspected drug trafficker Chinnavat ‘‘Boss’’ Naitrimit, who had a 500,000 baht bounty on his head. A total of 55 items, including 4 million baht and gold ornaments worth 61 million baht, were seized from him. He was taken before reporters yesterday at the Office of the Narcotics Control Board. SURAPOL PROMSAKA NA SAKOLNAKORN

Authorities also found television sets, CD and DVD players, MP3/MP4 players and materials used in gambling.

No drugs were found, but more than 200 prisoners out of 1,000 tested positive for drugs in a random testing.

Pol Maj Gen Khamronwit Thoopkrajang, acting chief of Police Region 1 Bureau, said the prison raid followed the confiscation of 3.5kg of crystal methamphetamine, or ice, on May 14 from people who told police investigators they had ordered the drugs from Bang Kwang inmates.

He said prison staff were suspected of helping smuggle the seized items.

"The items were smuggled through normal channels like visitors.

"The Corrections Department needs to do more to tighten this loophole," he said.

Nonthaburi governor Wichian Putthiwinyu said the operation was part of attempts to rein in drug networks operating from inside the prison.

Mr Wichian said recent prison raids nationwide suggested drug traffickers in other prisons had contact with inmates at Bang Kwang.

He said impromptu searches would continue to ensure inmates are no longer able to smuggle in prohibited items.

Corrections Department chief Pol Col Suchart Wonganantchai said the prison chief has been ordered to investigate how the prohibited items were smuggled.

He said the seized electronic devices will be examined to determine if they were modified to work as communications tools.

Pol Col Suchart said the prison raids were successful due to cooperation between police and local authorities.

The commander of the Bang Khwang maximum security prison in Nonthaburi has been placed under disciplinary investigation after a prison search late on Wednesday night turned up a number of mobile phones and a large number of contraband items.

Seventy-three DVD players and 30 music player units were found in the prison, apart from 30 mobile handsets, which Corrections Department Suchart Wonganantachai said were smuggled into the prison. He placed the blame on prison guards - but said relevant officials and chiefs of each detention area involved would also be held responsible.

Five mobile phones had their SIM cards locked by inmates and are undergoing the first scrutiny, he said. Seven prisons, out of a total 143 across the country, have been declared 'white prisons' - those undergoing reform or are regarded as clean after a series of thorough searches - under a department campaign following the crackdown. Suchart did not name the facilities.

The four-hour search at the maximum security prison is part of a crackdown on in-prison drug dealing by inmates with the help of corrupt prison guards. The search, involving a 600-strong force of policemen assisting 150 prison guards, also found 200 inmates selected randomly from a thousand tested positive for drug use.

A search at a Samut Sakhon prison yesterday found four mobile phones, and an 'ice'-consuming device. A 230-strong force conducted the dawn raid, which also found eight SIM cards and homemade weapons, while 32 inmates tested positive for drug use.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said a list of most- wanted 100 drug dealers would soon be made public -and he paraded a key suspect arrested with a Bt500,000 bounty on his head.

Chalerm said a large number of murders were taking place as drug dealers try to silence each other. Police officers were not involved and were unable to stop them. He did not elaborate.

At a police press conference, Chalerm paraded a suspect, Shinnawas Naitreemit, listed on the 25-top wanted file. His arrest resulted from the involvement of a suspect, Manop Chaichana, arrested in June last year with 2 million amphetamine tablets and 60 bars of heroin in his possession.

The corpses of six babies were found contained in a suitcase in the room.

He admitted he paid a total of 200,000 baht for the six infant bodies, which were to be sold on Taiwanese websites, police said.
Looking through the lens of children's rights

Seventeen-year-old Munlika Hutamai is helping protect children's rights

Published: 18/05/2012 at 02:39 AM

Newspaper section: Life

To many people, a Ministry of Education regulation that stipulates a specific hair length for female students in public schools may not appear worthy of discussion by a United Nations committee. But for 17-year-old Munlika Hutamai, who had a chance to voice her opinions about the rights of children in Thailand to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in Geneva, Switzerland, earlier this year, the issue reflects what she sees as a major obstacle towards the realisation of children's rights in Thailand: The attitude of adults towards children.

Munlika Hutamai, a Grade 12 student in Ayutthaya, is committed to do what she can to help promote children’s rights.

"Many adults think they have all the power when it comes to dealing with children," said Munlika, a Grade 12 student in Ayutthaya province. "Some of my friends were not allowed to take exams just because their hair was a bit longer than the required length. I think our academic achievement should not have anything to do with how long our hair is."

Munlika was one of two children who joined Thailand's official delegation in Geneva earlier this year, when the minister of Social Development and Human Security and other senior officials presented the country's report on what it is doing to ensure children's rights are respected. As one of 193 countries that has ratified the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Thailand is obligated to undertake the actions needed to promote and protect the rights of all children and to report on the progress it has made to the Committee every five years.

By ratifying the CRC in 1992, Thailand agreed to ensure that children _ without discrimination in any form _ benefit from special protection measures and assistance; have access to services such as education and health care; can develop their personalities, abilities and talents to the fullest potential; grow up in an environment of happiness, love and understanding; and are informed about and participate in achieving their rights.

The Thai delegation reported to the Committee on the Rights of the Child on the progress Thailand has made in ensuring these rights, including improved legislation and policies to protect children, improved access to health services and education, and progress towards universal birth registration. Munlika, however, focused on a different agenda. To her, children's participation is the issue that is central to all other child rights but one that's too often overlooked.

"Thai adults don't really listen to children," said Munlika, a straight-A student who was chosen from among 60 shortlisted students nationwide to represent Thailand's youth in Geneva.

"When we share our opinions in class, some of the teachers think we were trying to argue with them. We are not free to say what we think, and I believe this is due to problems related to both our culture and adults' attitudes."

Munlika said when children are not encouraged to speak out, they find it difficult to share their opinions in a constructive way when they grow up. In addition, Munlika believes that when children are not trained to think on their own, they end up lacking the analytical skills that are key to their overall development and reaching their full potential. And as a result, Munlika says, when children lag behind, the country also lags behind.

Munlika's says her travel with the official Thai delegation to Geneva, which was supported by Unicef, helped her realise that hundreds of thousands of children in Thailand still live in poverty, are not in school, and are at risk of abuse and exploitation. In her own community in Ayutthaya, Munlika says drugs, gangs and violence remain major problems.

Such problems are also common in the Far South, which is home to Peemrapat Rongsuwat, 17, the other child chosen to represent Thailand. Peemrapat, is from Narathiwat province, one of Thailand's three southernmost provinces where violence has claimed more than 5,200 lives since early 2004. He says poverty and the lack of education are the two biggest challenges facing children in his community.

"Every day on my way to school I see children my age just hanging out because their parents cannot afford to send them to school," said Peemrapat, who was born and grew up in Narathiwat. "Some families have many children, and their parents are not always able to take good care of all of them. As a result, some turn to drugs, and some are lured into insurgency groups. This is sad."

Despite living with the ongoing violence, he chooses to see life in a positive way. Peemrapat, a Buddhist whose best friend is a Muslim, strongly believes that religion is not the cause of the unrest in the South and that life in Narathiwat is not as scary as it appears in media reports. He was proud to tell the CRC Committee and other people he met in Geneva that Buddhists and Muslims in his neighbourhood are living in harmony.
Munlika and Peemrapat said the experience with the delegation helped them realise that children are extremely valuable to the society. Both have shared their experiences in Geneva with the media and with friends, and both said they are committed to do what they can to help promote and protect children's rights.

"Now I think less about myself and more about other children who are less fortunate," said Munlika. "I now look at things through the lens of children's rights."

I was thinking about this question when I was listening to Jimi Hendrix last night. I had never really sat down and listened to most of his stuff. He is one of the most talented guitarist's and lyricists I have ever heard.
I kind of wish I lived in the 60's. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong generation. Flower child at times.
Things seemed to change after the 1960's. After Lennon died, the world took a turn towards the information/technology age.

I mean having facebook and cell phones has made for a more convenient and rushed society, but it has also made for a more lazy, and detached society.

I'm sure many of you can relate to what I mean having been part of this generation.

Phuket Resort Receptionist Raped Me, Says Young German Tourist

By Phuketwan Reporter
Friday, May 18, 2012

PHUKET: A young tourist from Germany told police yesterday that she was raped by a receptionist at a popular four-star resort on Phuket's west coast.

Police were ''very, very slow'' to investigate the claims, friends of the German woman said, and the case had not been handled with care and consideration.

At one stage yesterday, attempts were made by at least one Tourist Police officer at Chalong Police Station to bring the alleged rapist to his alleged victim ''so he could apologise.''

Late last night, the receptionist from the Centara Karon Resort Phuket was being held by police in Chalong but had yet to be charged.

A bite mark that the woman said she made on the man's arm had yet to be photographed, according to the woman's friends.

The young German woman, aged 20, had qualified in her chosen profession and spent a year working in Ireland before arriving on Phuket on Saturday with an Irish friend on her way to Australia.

The German and her 23-year-old Irish friend went out to Patong on Wednesday night and the Irish girl returned to their resort room about 2am on Thursday, bothered by mosquito bites.

About 7.30am, the German girl returned to the resort, escorted by two Australian men she had met who decided to accompany her to make sure she arrived at the resort safely.

The three tried to rouse the Irish woman, who had the key card to the room, but could not awaken her.

The Australian men then walked back to the resort's reception desk to get another key card, ands returned with the receptionist, but the key brought by the receptionist failed to open the door.

Outside the door, the receptionist asked the Australians whether they were guests at the resort and, when they said they were not guests, told the Australians to leave, the German woman said. The Australians then left the resort.

The receptionist went back to the reception desk, collected another key card and returned to the German woman outside the door of her room. He then opened the door to the next room and dragged her inside, the woman told police.

After a struggle in which the guest bit the receptionist, the receptionist raped her while still wearing most of his uniform, saying ''Sorry, sorry, sorry,'' the German woman said.

After the man fled, the German woman went through the resort garden and banged on the rear glass door of her own room, managing to awaken her friend. She was in tears.

The two then telephoned an Irish man, a family friend who lives on Phuket, and the three went to Chalong police.

At one stage, the Irishman later said, six policemen entered the room to interview the alleged victim.

After the friends complained, they went to Phuket City Police Station where an interview was carried out by Phuket's only female officer, Lieutenant Nuchchari Rongkeaw.

The German woman underwent a physical check and tests at Vachira Phuket Hospital before returning to Chalong Police Station, where the alleged perpetrator was permitted to come close enough to wai and say ''hello'' before the victim complained.

Before going to Chalong Police Station, the woman, her friend, a translator and a resort representative examined the scene of the alleged crime with the investigating female police officer.

The woman is expected to take her case to Phuket Provincial Court today. She and her travelling companion moved out of the resort and are now staying with the Irish family friend.

Late last night, the receptionist continued to insist that he did not rape the woman and that sex was consensual.

Germany's honorary consul was involved in the case yesterday and the Irish honorary consul is expected to become involved today.

The kiosks have been fitted in 16 London boroughs for a 12-month trial

The Metropolitan Police has implemented a system to extract mobile phone data from suspects held in custody.
The data includes call history, texts and contacts, and the BBC has learned that it will be retained regardless of whether any charges are brought.
The technology is being used in 16 London boroughs, and could potentially be used by police across the UK.
Campaign group Privacy International described the move as a "possible breach of human rights law".

Until now, officers had to send mobiles off for forensic examination in order to gather and store data, a process which took several weeks.
Under the new system, content will be extracted using purpose built terminals in police stations.
It will allow officers to connect a suspect's mobile and produce a print out of data from the device, as well as saving digital records of the content.

'Retained and handled'
Stephen Kavanagh Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service

A Met Police spokesman told the BBC that when a suspect was released, "data received from the handsets is retained and handled in accordance with other data held by the MPS [Metropolitan Police Service]" - regardless of whether charges had been brought.

Guidelines given to officers state that data extraction can happen only if there is sufficient suspicion the mobile phone was used for criminal activity.
"Mobile phones and other devices are increasingly being used in all levels of criminal activity," said Stephen Kavanagh, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.

"When a suspect is arrested and found with a mobile phone that we suspect may have been used in crime, traditionally we submit it to our digital forensic laboratory for analysis.

"Therefore, a solution located within the boroughs that enables trained officers to examine devices and gives immediate access to the data in that handset is welcomed."

'Illegal'
Over 300 London officers will be trained in using the "intuitive, fully-guided touchscreen desktop data acquisition tool", created by mobile forensic firm Radio Tactics.
The cost of leasing the 16 terminals for 12 months and training the officers will be £50,000, the Met said.

Privacy International has warned against the possibility of such tech eventually be used on the streets

Privacy International has expressed serious concern over the system.
"We are looking at a possible breach of human rights law," spokeswoman Emma Draper told the BBC.
"It is illegal to indefinitely retain the DNA profiles of individuals after they are acquitted or released without charge, and the communications, photos and location data contained in most people's smartphones is at least as valuable and as personal as DNA."

Ms Draper added that while the Met's current plans were limited to fixed extraction terminals in stations, portable technology was readily available.
"Examining suspects' mobile phones after they are arrested is one thing, but if this technology was to be taken out onto the streets and used in stop-and-searches, that would be a significant and disturbing expansion of police powers."

I guess we all could see this one coming...

US singer Donna Summer, famous for disco classics including I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby, has died at the age of 63.
Summer was one of disco's biggest stars and also had a huge influence on the synth pop and dance music scenes.
Her family said they were "at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy".
Stars including Kylie Minogue, Sir Elton John and Mary J Blige have paid tribute.
R&B singer Blige said on Twitter that Summer was "truly a game changer", while producer Quincy Jones said her voice "was the heartbeat and soundtrack of a decade".

Summer's is known for the global hit I Feel Love

Minogue described her as "one of my earliest musical inspirations", while Dionne Warwick said she was sad to lose a great performer and "dear friend".
Summer, who was reported to have had cancer, had been living in Florida with her husband Bruce Sudano.
A statement from her family said: "Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.
"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."

Elton John said Summer was more than the "queen of disco", adding: "Her records sound as good today as they ever did.
"That she has never been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is a total disgrace especially when I see the second-rate talent that has been inducted."

Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes said: "It's extremely rare that you hear one song that completely changes the way you perceive music. I Feel Love achieved that."
Singer Marc Almond recalled how Summer's work with Italian synthesiser pioneer Giorgio Moroder had "changed the face of music and changed my life".

Summer performed on American Idol in 2008

"I Feel Love was a truly original and barrier breaking record, and Now I Need You and Working The Midnight Shift are simply some of the best euphoric electronic tracks ever," he said.
BBC Radio 2 presenter Paul Gambaccini said I Feel Love was "one of the key records in the history of electronic dance music and will always be recognised as such".

Summer grew up in Boston and started singing in her church's gospel choir before starting to perform in stage musicals.
It was her work with the Moroder that led to her pop breakthrough with Love To Love You Baby in 1975 - the first of 29 UK top 40 singles.
Her expressive vocal style, coupled with Moroder's pulsating rhythms, made the song a big club and chart hit - as well as leading it to be banned by several radio stations for its suggestive overtones.

Giorgio Moroder (right) produced some of Summer's biggest hits

Between 1978-80, her career hit its commercial peak with a string of US hit singles including Last Dance, MacArthur Park, Bad Girls and Hot Stuff.
She won five Grammy Awards and had a further 12 nominations, becoming the first black artist to win a Grammy in a rock category - taking best rock vocal performance for Hot Stuff in 1979.
Her influence stretched across musical boundaries, with Madonna, Whitney Houston and David Guetta among the artists who sampled her, while Bruce Springsteen wrote songs for her.

Producer Pete Waterman, who worked with the singer on tracks including This Time I Know It's for Real in the 1980s, told BBC News: "She was the icing on the cake. We were at the top of our game when we worked with her. She was just fantastic.
"Donna was unique," he added. "Donna did things Donna's way. One of the first things she said to me was, when you work with me, you work on Donna time… She wasn't a diva, she was inspirational. Her talent came from God, she knew she couldn't just turn it on."

I know she was a big inspiration to Robi. RIP Donna
